Travel advisory for Japan Earthquake
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 struck off the coast of Japan (the epicenter is roughly 250 miles northeast of Tokyo) a little before 3 pm, March 11th. Early news reports affirm 2 subsequent aftershocks registered 6.8 and 7.1.
Luckily, early information coming in is reporting most guests and colleagues are safe. Due to the disruption in air traffic, a few guests en route to join tours have been re-routed to various parts of Japan, and we are working on having them meet with our groups and tour guides.
The magnitude of the earthquake should not be taken lightly, but with thorough preparation, Japan has some of the world’s most advanced infrastructure to handle this type of situation. Despite some structural damage, Japan’s efficient early-warning systems deployed throughout the country have been able save many lives.
The hardest-hit areas are off the relatively remote northeastern coast of Japan which do not affect our tour destinations (Tokyo and Kyoto) directly.
Unfortunately, no further details are available just yet. If you are currently booked on an upcoming tour, we will regrettably not be able to provide more firm answers until the situation is properly assessed with our local operations teams and airlines. We will be sure to keep everyone updated as more information comes along.
